Katherine Morrissey is working on a book exploring romance and gender for the contemporary digital age

In a battle for content, streamers like Amazon Prime, Hulu and Disney+ are relying more than ever on books and graphic novels for gripping stories to attract subscribers. While a passionate pre-existing fan base can ensure more viewers, it can also create impossible expectations.

And in the age of social media, producers are often hesitant to tamper with beloved source material too much, lest the Twitterverse destroy its chances before it even gets through opening weekend.

One example is Netflix’s new adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Persuasion,” which experimented with breaking the fourth wall, an approach where the lead speaks directly to the camera — in this case, with a tinge of snark. This did not please the public.

Katherine Morrissey, an assistant professor of film and media studies in the Department of English at Arizona State University, studies romance genres and has reviewed several Jane Austen adaptations.

Morrissey said Netflix’s “Persuasion” adaptation was likely torn because it didn’t meet the expectations of an audience that already had “close ties to the source material and strong feelings about what the adaptation should look like. , what the narrative should be, what scenes are preserved.”

“Netflix was probably trying to woo female audiences with the material, and it backfired,” she said.

Morrissey also studies the impacts of digitization on creative communities, looking in particular at film and show release standards, mass reaction, and how women are viewed in romantic contexts.

She shared her thoughts on the recent wave of movie and show adaptations, as well as the effect of social media and other factors on the phenomenon.

Question: Why do you think “Persuasion” and other similar adaptations were poorly received?

Answer: Because social media and fan networks are so important today, you see how they shape people’s responses. So if you get enough people to frame an adaptation in a particular way, it’s going to color how everyone gets into it. With ‘Persuasion’ there was so much hate thrown at it, just from the trailer, that I don’t think anyone was going to like this movie. There is a moment when the tide turns.

Q: Apart from financial motivations, what can influence how a story is adapted to film?

A: Whether… a streaming service (is) specifically interested in a certain niche of subscribers, or if it’s a big franchise movie, (producers are) looking for a particular reach, and all those different contexts really shape how they adapt the film.

Q: What’s a good example of an adaptation done well?

A: An older example that went in a better direction (than “Persuasion”) is Peter Jackson’s adaptation of “Lord of the Rings.” They were so careful throughout the process to constantly reassure fans that this franchise was in good hands and being honored appropriately. And it helped them deal with pushback, and fans really embraced the adaptation.

Q: Neil Gaiman’s beloved graphic novel ‘Sandman’ nervously premiered on Netflix earlier this year, and while blessed by the author, fans of the novel were excited but extremely concerned about the adaptation. As a fan yourself, what do you think?

A: I was afraid to see the adaptation. I think it turned out well, but honestly, I’ll never like it because of my emotional attachment to the graphic novel.

Q: Is there any clear data to back up the feeling that there are a lot more adaptations going on right now?

A: That may seem like it since streamers are in such fierce competition, and adapting something that has already proven popular seems less financially risky.

Q: You are working on a book, “Redefining Romance: Love & Desire in Today’s Digital Culture,” as part of your appointment as a researcher at the Institute for Humanities. Tell us about that.

A: In an analog age, romantic genres helped stabilize a hierarchy of sexual norms for women and privileged a particular type of white, heteronormative femininity. In the 21st century, digital platforms use algorithms to manage a range of competing sexual hierarchies. Across all media, romance genres have been reshaped by changes in technology, emerging digital markets, and a more participatory media culture.

(I’m interested in looking at) how to start making sense of today’s media landscape, where we have all these different avenues to watch media, where there’s not one unified place where everyone watches the same thing at the same time? So how do you start thinking about how standards circulate, how standards change over time? I am interested in the representations of female desire through the media. And I look at romantic media in this broad way, because we often tend to think of one thing when we think of romance, like romantic comedy or romance novels. The reality is that romantic media is far more complicated and diverse than these particular little silos.

The praise Davis earned for her portrayal of Nanisca in The female king points out that her appearances as Amanda Waller in the DCEU could add the same practical energy to Waller. Although Amanda Waller is usually one to manipulate her haters behind the scenes, there are several ways Davis’ physicality shows that Nanisca could similarly translate to Waller.


How DCEU Can Improve Davis’ Waller

In her present-tense stories, Amanda Waller is a US government agent who runs Argus and monitors the metahuman community, but she wouldn’t have started there. The DCEU showing Waller as having a significant military background would fit nicely into his rise up the government ladder. As seen in his manipulations of the Suicide Squad, particularly his f-bomb filled threats to provocative assassin Bloodsport (Idris Elba) in The Suicide SquadDavis’s Waller could easily have been a commanding officer or maybe even a drill sergeant.

Showing some of Waller’s military past through flashback stories could allow Viola Davis to channel some of the same physical training and combat skills she uses as Nanisca in The female king. This could also play into his current role with Argus and his innate talent for Machiavellian manipulation. Waller, as a commander removed from the thick of battle, could easily trick unsuspecting heroes and villains into underestimating her as a physical threat, giving her the perfect opportunity to pull off another surprise if someone like Peacemaker, Bloodsport, or Harley Quinn was really trying to challenge her, either in Amanda Waller’s spin-off series or another DCEU movie.

Amanda Waller’s role in DCEU stays true to her comic book origins as a master string-puller who can be both ally and foe to superheroes depending on their alignment of goals. Yet Davis’ performance in The female king showed off his abilities in an action role that his future portrayals of Waller in the DCEU should definitely use. It would somewhat break the rules of Waller’s usual modus operandi, but if Amanda Waller herself is living proof of anything, it’s that rules are meant to be broken.

That said, we are crying tears of joy over videos of black girls reacting to seeing themselves portrayed in the film.

Accumulating millions and millions of views in just a few days, the trailer for “The Little Mermaid” shows jaw-dropping underwater footage, celestial fish scenes, a sunken ship and treasure, and most importantly, Bailey’s phenomenal singing “Under The Sea” as our favorite mermaid Ariel.

Hitting all the most epic high notes and reinventing the classic Disney track, there’s no doubt that Bailey already sounds like an Oscar. and Grammy bells – and if you know his musical duo Chloe x Halle alongside his sister, you to know her voice is amazing. The trailer shows off her gorgeous iridescent mermaid tail and, of course, the trademark, flowing red hair.

Another must-have? Like a twitter user explained, the super-talented 22-year-old actress “practiced holding her breath for three hours in order to REALLY shoot the movie in the Gulf of Mexico.” As in, fully underwater. No words!

Still, some people have taken to social media to question the cast of the upcoming film, saying Ariel is meant to look like the version from the 1989 animated film – AKA white with red hair and blue eyes. . To that, we’d like to remind everyone that Ariel is actually a mythological sea creature that doesn’t exist in real life, and could be any race under the sun (or sea).

As TikTok user @anitaconswing best explained, Ariel can be of any race as she’s a “half-fish” and a “mythological creature that doesn’t actually exist.” As actress Lynda Carter asked her about Twitter, “Are people mad that The Little Mermaid is black? The lady who is also a fish? Who lives under the sea? Whose best friend is a talking crab? Make sense!

As the ‘controversy’ is discouraged, parents of black girls have taken to social media to show their adorable reactions to the trailer – seeing themselves dramatically portrayed by Bailey’s Ariel.

A TikTok video from @preciousavery shows an adorable three-year-old watching the new trailer on the couch, jumping up realizing the new Ariel is black. The toddler smiles and exclaims, “I think she’s brunette,” and we melt.

Another TikTok video courtesy of @shavonne_3 shows a precious girl watching the trailer from a tablet in the car, singing the iconic song. Her mother asks her, “Does she look like you?” and the girl replies, “Yeah…well, she’s got brown skin.” Smiling, the girl said, “I liked her…she’s pretty.”

Another video shows a child utterly mesmerized by the trailer, stopping it just to stare in awe at Bailey’s Ariel.

University Housing and Dining has launched Residence Life Cinema, a streaming service featuring up to 400 movies and TV shows, for campus residents.


University of Iowa students living on campus can now access a selection of movies and TV shows through the university’s new entertainment streaming service.

Earlier this month, University Housing and Dining launched Residence Life Cinema, a streaming service owned by Swank Motion Pictures, Inc., an international film distributor and licensor, for students living in residence halls.

Greg Thompson, UI’s home education director, said the service has up to 400 movies, from classics to new releases, that are constantly being shot along with a few TV series. He explained that the service is a year-long trial that Swank presented to the user interface to gauge student enjoyment and usage.

UI’s Associated Residences Board initially explored and pushed the service to see what more the UI could provide for campus residents, he said.

“Part of campus life is that there is an expectation of services that are provided to students,” Thompson said. “Just like laundry, just like being able to have an accessible meal plan…being able to have access to video or digital entertainment, I think, is starting to become an expectation.”

Other Big Ten universities, such as the University of Minnesota, have similar dormitory entertainment services. The university offers students UMN-TV, with over 120 channels. Indiana University has another streaming service, XFINITY Stream.

Thompson said he’s confident the service will serve UI students more than just after-class entertainment, eventually expanding its use for higher education.

“The ability to have a company that will work with us to curate and pull specific titles around what’s happening on campus or different celebrations of the different identities we have on campus is just another way to complete the mission academic,” he said.

Molly Bimm, a freshman transfer student at UI, lives in Catlett Residence Hall and was thrilled after hearing about the new streaming service. She immediately used it to watch “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”

“I think I’d probably come home on a Friday night after class and watch in a category that interests me and choose a movie to watch for the night,” Bimm said. “It’s nice that it’s free, and it’s nice that I can watch it right on my laptop anywhere.”

Emi O’Brochta, a third-year UI student, lives off campus and said she was upset when she heard about the service’s fun offers excluding students who don’t live on campus.

“[I feel] kinda disappointed that when we lived in the dorms we didn’t have access to them, and that would be fine,” O’Brochta said. “I sort of understand because the cost of housing is so high that it makes sense that it coincides with the cost, but that’s a little disappointing.”

Bimm said she enjoyed the easy-to-navigate and categorized layout that Residence Life Cinema offers for a wide variety of movies, leading her to enthusiastically dub the service “a student Netflix.”

“I think I might watch one before my study session,” Bimm said.
