John Leguizamo criticizes the cast of the animated film Super Mario Bros. for lack of diversity

Original Super Mario Bros.. Movie star John Leguizamo has weighed in on the upcoming animated reboot. Recently it was announced that the new Super Mario Bros.. The film will be released in December 2022. The Super Mario Bros. was also revealed. all-star voice cast, which includes names like Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser.

This news got a lot of mixed opinions from fans. One person who wasn’t exactly thrilled with the new cast is John Leguizamo who personally said so in a recent Twitter post. For his part, the former actor of Luigi says he is “happy” to see a new Super Mario Bros.. film set nearly three decades after the live-action film was released in theaters. Unfortunately, Leguizamo blew up the cast, sharing his disappointment that there were no “Latinx” actors in the lead roles.

“So glad #superMariobros is restarting!” Leguizamo says in the tweet. “Obviously it’s pretty iconic. But too bad they went all white! No Latinx in the lead! Groundbreaking colorblind cast in the original! Plus, I’m the only one who knows how to make this movie work in terms of the script!”

Released in 1993, the live-action Super Mario Bros.. film was directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jenkel. Written by Parker Bennett, Terry Runte and Ed Solomon, it was rather loosely based on the original video games, set in a dystopian world much darker than Nintendo’s version of the Mushroom Kingdom. Bob Hoskins starred as Mario alongside John Leguizamo as Luigi, with a supporting cast including Dennis Hopper as King Koopa, Samantha Mathis as Princess Daisy, and Frank Welker as Yoshi.

The cast of the animated film Super Mario Bros. includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson. as Kamek, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. Original Mario voice actor Charles Swift will be featured for unspecified cameos, and while it was a nice nod, many Nintendo fans weren’t happy that Swift didn’t voice Mario. .

“I’m so thrilled to announce that I’m going to be the voice of this video game that I dreamed of playing as a kid. Dreams come true,” Chris Pratt said on Instagram after his casting at Mario’s announcement. . Also revealing that he used to rob the good neighborhoods to play the original mario arcade game as a child, Pratt also said, “It just popped into my head right now. The quarter I stole from the wishing well to play Super Mario Bros.. has come true, that I become the voice of Mario. But, I clearly stole someone else’s wish, so I’m just waiting for this row of karmic dominoes to come down on me.”

New Super Mario Bros.. The animated film is set to hit theaters on December 21, 2022. Meanwhile, fans of the original Super Mario Bros.. film starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo can download an extended version of the film which has been made available online. The film was notoriously a dud when it premiered in 1993, but it has developed a cult following over the years, and clearly Leguizamo himself has remained proud of his work as Luigi.
