Karnan True Story, Movie Cast & All About Tamil Movie on Amazon Prime
Karnan, with award-winning Tamil actor Dhanush, is about a young man fighting for the rights of an underprivileged and repressed community. In many ways, this is a symbolic film of the current wrestling era, albeit of a different and more ingrained genre.
Karnan will not be an easy watch. It tackles caste violence, but more importantly, shows in excruciatingly painful detail how repressed communities want nothing more than to be heard and to have a fair chance instead of having every chance against them. Writer / director Mari Selvaraj, who dealt with a similar theme in her early days Pariyerum Perumal, took his portrayal of caste politics to a whole new level.
The real story of Karnan film, cast and more –
Here is a universe of characters, each beautifully fleshed out. Each is a story and a fight for dignity coming together in waves that culminate in the character of Karnan tried by Dhanush. You might think the film is all about loud rants and bloody bloodshed, but the writing of this script is such that the angst in its characters, while toned down in its presentation, is strong and clear in its impact. Of course, there is quite a bit of violence in the film.
Watch seasoned actors like Lal (Helen, Thakkol, Iyobinthe Pusthakam, Salt and Pepper – all in Malayalam) is a pleasure. The stoic support and restraint it brings to an unleashed Karnan that’s what good acting is. From the village chief to Karnan’s lover, to the village’s pregnant woman and more, each character’s story takes its time to create a build-up that ultimately explodes on screen.
The film has encountered its fair share of controversies. One was a claim that it was loosely based on the Kodiyankulam violence in 1995 when, at the request of upper caste village men, around 600 police officers attacked the Dalit village of Kodiyankulam in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu. . They destroyed property and looted people, all in an effort to keep them oppressed and materially poor. While the director has denied such connections, he said inspiration is always drawn from incidents around us, although it’s not the cinema’s job to describe the true story. The DMK party took offense that the film was reportedly based in 1997 when it was in power when in reality the Kodiyankulam incident took place in 1995 when the ruling party was AIADMK.
