Mario movie cast includes Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black and Seth Rogen
Shigeru Miyamoto dropped a bombshell on Nintendo fans watching today’s Nintendo Direct stream when he announced new details for the upcoming Mario animated film. The film is slated for release on December 21, 2022, and Chris Pratt himself will be voicing the plumber of the platform.
Joining Pratt is a downright ridiculous bunch of people making jokes you’ve probably seen in other animated films:
- Mario – Chris Pratt
- Luigi – Charlie Day
- Fishing – Anya Taylor-Joy
- Bowser – Jack Black
- Donkey Kong – Seth Rogen
- Toad – Keegan-Michael Key
- Cranky Kong – Fred Armisen
- Kamek – Kevin Michael Richardson
- Spike – Sebastian Maniscalco
These many A-listers signing up for a Nintendo movie come as a surprise to many fans, especially given the questionable legacy of Mario’s latest film. Although to be fair, video game movies are kind of a hot commodity right now. Hell, this isn’t even the only video game movie that Jack Black is lending his voice to right now – he’s also playing Claptrap in the upcoming Borderlands movie.
If you’re wondering, “Hold the phone, Mario already has a voice actor and his name is Creepy Charles Martinet,” it may or may not give you comfort that Nintendo said that Martinet will appear in “surprise cameos” in the film.
The movie Mario is a collaboration between Nintendo and the animation house Illumination, the people best known for the Ugly Me and Villain films. The directors of the film are Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the duo behind the Teen Titans Go! and his movie Teen Titans Go! At the movie theater.
It would be weird to hear Martinet’s Mario speak a lot in a feature film, but I suspect it will be even stranger to hear Starlord’s voice come out of Mario’s mouth. (We also recognize that Mario isn’t exactly a PC game franchise, but that’s a big deal, and there was technically a Mario PC game that time forgot.)
