“Outsiders” movie site in Sperry on the verge of restoration – News – The Shawnee News-Star
SPERRY, Okla. (AP) – A fundraising campaign has been launched to restore another ‘The Outsiders’ film location to past glory.
A former DX gas station in Sperry is among the locations where footage was shot for the 1983 film, based on SE Hinton’s beloved young adult novel. A GoFundMe account has been opened for what is called The Outsiders DX Museum.
The GoFundMe page, created by Gary Coulson of Sperry, said the station was undergoing restoration in an effort to continue to honor and preserve Oklahoma’s rich pop culture history.
The goal is to raise $ 30,000. More than $ 600 was raised in the first 17 hours of the fundraising campaign, Tulsa World reported.
“Our goal, with your help, is to recreate the DX station to appear like in the movie, which is set in 1965,” the GoFundMe page said. “Therefore, we have to purchase and install accessories such as a two-sided DX panel, gas pumps, Anco wiper screen, 1951 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe vehicle, telephone booth and other items. DX related. “
The page also said the building would need painting, new electrical wiring, concrete work and a security system.
“We hope that the cities of Sperry and Tulsa, as well as the state of Oklahoma, will benefit from new tourism, and that fans of SE Hinton and ‘The Outsiders’ have another destination to discover during their visit. Outsiders filming location tour. “
It was recently announced that a grand opening for The Outsiders House Museum will take place August 9-10. Actor C. Thomas Howell, who played Ponyboy Curtis in “The Outsiders,” will be returning for tours of filming locations.
A scene at the DX station featured Howell, Ralph Macchio as Johnny Cade, Matt Dillon as Dallas Winston, Rob Lowe as Sodapop Curtis, and Tom Cruise as Steve Randle.
This year marks the 36th anniversary of the premiere of the movie “The Outsiders”. Perhaps the most famous location where Francis Ford Coppola’s film, based on a book by SE Hinton, was shot in Tulsa is the House of the Outsiders. But this is by no means the only place.
