Real-life Tiger King casting reveals his casting choices
There seems to be a new chapter in the King tiger saga every day, of a series of “sequels” in preparation for a litany of lawsuits, requests for pardons and reopened investigations. But despite all the latest developments, including a surprise “after the show” episode on Netflix in which actor / comedian Joel McHale interviewed the stars of the sensational docuseries, fan interest remains enraged. Which leads us, of course, to the front doors (and heavy pockets) of Hollywood.
We still don’t know how many scripts King tiger projects are officially underway. (There appear to be quite a few.) Kate McKinnon of SNL Celebrity slated to star Big Cat Rescue owner Carole Baskin in limited series based on Wondery podcast Exotic Joe: King of the Tigers, but that was in development months before Netflix released its series in March.
On April 6, Rob Lowe got involved, posting an Instagram photo of himself wearing a Joe Exotic outfit, with blonde hair and a pistol holster. He wrote: “Rob Exotic. UPDATE: Ryan Murphy and I are going to develop our version of this crazy story. Stay tuned!”

While most of Murphy’s current projects revolve around television (including, but not limited to, american horror story, Pose, and Hollywood), he has also worked on film projects including Eat Pray Love and Prom, soon available on Netflix. It is not known if Murphy and Lowe are working on a series or a movie.
To add fuel to the frenzy, Hollywood journalist reported in early May that Nicolas Cage would play the role of Exotic in a new eight-episode scripted series from CBS Television Studios and Imagine Entertainment. This the version will be based around a 2019 new York magazine article recounting the eccentric story of Exotic.
It is therefore not yet clear how many versions of the breeder turned doomed will see in the near future. But that didn’t stop the King tiger cast from worrying about celebrities wearing wigs and cargo pants on their behalf. In Netflix’s post-show episode, titled The tiger king and me, McHale asked the cast members who they’d rather play them with on the big screen. Mixing their picks with a few selections of ours, ELLE.com has put together a dream cast for the many scripted tales of this stranger-than-fiction story.
Rob Lowe and Nic Cage might both be putting themselves in the shoes of the exotic animal breeder, but if Joe has anything to say about it, another Hollywood actor will play his part. According to the hollywood reporter, Joe would like Brad Pitt or “Joe Dirt” (meaning David Spade) to wear his designer caps and sequined shirts. Other proposed actors include Edouard Norton, Dax shephard, and Michael keaton.
Oh, and according to People, Robert Moor, the host of Exotic Joe: King of the Tigers podcast thinks Margot Robbie – of all people – should change the role of gender. Because she’s a good actress? Of course, Robert. We will ride with it.
Kate McKinnon is already set to play our favorite cool cat in her own upcoming series, but we have no idea who Murphy has in mind to play her, or if Baskin will make an appearance alongside Cage. To complicate matters, Baskin seems unwilling to see himself onscreen again. (She expressed her frustration and disappointment at King tiger.) Always, Someone must wear the (animal print) pants here, and fans are fighting for Lisa kudrow, Patricia clarkson, and Shelley Long. Personally, we think this is the perfect opportunity for Kudrow to return to the flower crown.
Steve Buscemi’s name has drifted in and out of several fake casts for King tiger on Twitter, but our vote is for him to play the good eye of Carole, Camelot-the singer and ever-devoted husband Howard. He would find the perfect balance between awkward and sweet; don’t imagine him in a cave man outfit. No actor deserves this.
Arguably one of the show’s most disturbing characters, Doc Antle has been silent about who might bear his name in a biopic. Will Ferrell seems to be a spearhead for the role – can you imagine how naturally he would rock this soul patch? – but Tim Robbins and Matt Damon could also bring the star power to the owner of the safari.
The man who now runs Joe Exotic’s Greater Wynnewood Exotic Wildlife Park, who may or may not have been involved in the murder plot, will need an actor with courage. Can we suggest – as some have already done –Sean Penn? He’s got the right look, and we know he can match Lowe’s rugged bad boy bravado. Unfortunately, we don’t know yet if her little girl or her (ugh) “Hot nanny” would get a role in a miniseries or biopic.
In an interview with The Morning Beat by RADIO.com Channel Q, Jeff’s wife Lauren has revealed that she’d like Isla Fisher to play her in a biopic. (With Fisher’s bright red locks, we can certainly see that.) Jeff replied, “If Isla Fisher is going to be Lauren, then I want to play Jeff.” As in, itself. Class as always.
Bill Hader. Sorry, that’s not a question. Erik Cowie, Joe’s former chief zookeeper, deserves an actor with not only extraordinary reach but the ability to pull through it too an awesome wig. No one knows how to mix bizarre comedy with grim realism like Barry star Hader, making it a perfect fit for the King tiger to throw.
Joe’s former husband is not only rock a new dentition, but he has some ideas on who should play him in an adaptation. He revealed to CNN that he would prefer Shia LaBeouf or Channing Tatum. He must have an eye on famous lookalikes, because some fans have already suggested LaBeouf for the role. We can’t help but agree.
Former GW Zoo Director Reinke revealed to McHale in The tiger king and me that he’s aiming for Matthew McConaughey to play him. Some say there is a resemblance, although I’m not sure if I see it. But I must give Reinke credit for having seen big. McConaughey has a reputation for approaching unusual roles with finesse, so we have no doubts he could bring drama and lightness in equal measure to one. King tiger production.
Saff, the former zoo worker who lost his arm to one of the tigers, has a very specific actor in mind to recreate his life: Brandon Baker, the face behind the original 1999 Disney Channel film. Johnny Tsunami. I am very supportive of returning all of our Disney Channel favorites to Hollywood stardom.
“I think the only person who was brought up is Billy Bob Thornton,” Rick Kirham told McHale during The tiger king and me. And Kirkham approves of the fan cast, given Thorton’s penchant for hats. But while Kirkham surely knows himself better than I do, I can’t help but think that Ed Harris deserves a spot on the list. The man behind WestworldThe black clad cowboy would make a fascinating and intricate Kirkham.
Joe Exotic’s libertarian campaign manager – truly one of the group’s most underrated characters – might want to wash his hands of GW Zoo history. But if a movie goes into production, we doubt Dial will drop from the lineup. In that case, he’ll need an actor like Josh Gad or Clark Duke to run Joe’s gubernatorial and presidential races. Fans seem to be divided between God and Duke, but as long as the chosen actor thinks this is all bananas, he’ll be a perfect match for Dial’s attitude.
Joe’s current husband, Dillon Passage, may be waiting for Joe to get home from prison, but in the meantime he seems to have been thinking about who should play him in a movie. He said PEOPLE, “Zac Efron.” As if there had never been the slightest question.
