Russell Crowe joins the cast of KRAVEN THE HUNTER

Several years ago, Sony announced a solo movie for Spider-Man villain Kraven the Hunter. But despite several casting rumors, no one was ever confirmed in the lead role. Until now. It seems that the old Kick ass and Quicksilver actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson gets a third leading role in the comic, as The envelope just announced that he was playing Kraven. Going through The Hollywood Reporter, Russell Crowe also has a role in the film, although details remain under wraps that JC Chandor is directing. This is Sony’s third spin-off for a Spider-Man comic book villain, after Venom and the next Morbus.

Marvel Comics

In the original Marvel comics, Sergei Kravinoff was born into an aristocratic Russian family. He becomes a world famous international big game hunter, who tries to catch the ultimate and elusive prize – Spider-Man. The villain first appears in The Amazing Spider-Man #15 (1964). The Creation Stan Lee/Steve Ditko is a founding member of the Sinister Six. Later stories show the wizard Calypso giving Kravinoff a herbal potion, granting him enhanced speed and senses that match that of a wild jungle cat.

Unlike Venom, Kraven’s character never had a lifespan outside of Spider-Man’s villain. So it’s hard to see how they’re going to create a narrative around the character that doesn’t involve the wall-crawler in some form. There is no news of Tom Holland appearing in the film so far. One angle they could go with is Kraven coming to the big city, looking to hunt down Spidey as the ultimate prize. But seeing as that’s all Kraven’s point of view, we would never see Spider-Man without his mask. That means it could be anyone playing it.

Fans were hoping to see Kraven the Hunter in the Sinister Six lineup, for the next Spider-Man: No Coming Home. But it looks like they want to feature him in his own movie first. As long as he keeps that wild fur-lined vest, we’re at least intrigued by the possibility. There is no release date yet for the Kraven the hunter feature film.
