Simu Liu joins Barbie movie cast alongside Margot Robbie

Costs Simu LiuThe big entry into the MCU with last year’s blockbuster Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the Marvel star has found her next project. As reported by Variety, Liu will join the cast of Barbie in an unspecified role.

The news comes soon after America Ferrera‘s cast in the film, whose role is also still unknown, and Liu joins an impressive cast that includes Birds of prey Star Margot Robbie like Barbie herself and Blade Runner 2049 Star Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s iconic significant other. The film is directed by Greta Gerwig based on a screenplay she wrote with her longtime partner Noah Buambach. The movie itself is based on the popular line of dolls of the same name, and it’s been a project in development since 2019. Barbie is set to begin production in early 2022 at Warner Brothers’ Leavesden Studios in London, and it is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2023.

Robbie is also producing through his production company LuckyChap with the company’s executive Tom Ackerley. CEO of Mattel Films Robbie Brenner and filmmaker David Heman also serve as producers on the project.

With the massive amount of talent involved in this film, it will be interesting to see what Gerwig, Robbie and now Liu bring to this toy adaptation. Gerwig comes out of his Oscar-nominated films lady bird and Little woman(2019) whose screenplays for both films were included in these nominations. On the other hand, besides Robbie’s endless acting credits, the actress has gone on to produce Oscar-nominated movies like Me Tonya and Promising young woman who both won an Oscar. If this trend continues, we could see Barbie as an Oscar nominee with Ken and Barbie soaking it all up in their famous dream house. However, in all seriousness, this movie has talent from every corner of its production, and it seems to have the best writer, director, and cast possible to bring the Barbie character to life.

Liu was amazing as Shang-Chi and, from his only SNL hosting gig, the actor has wonderful comedic timing. Just imagining him in a scene with Gosling’s Ken and Robbie’s Barbie, preferably partying, is already a smile, and hopefully we’ll find out who he’ll be playing before filming begins.
