The one-stop-shop cinema site aiming to dominate the world
As the entertainment industry continues to evolve for the digital future, watching movies at home has become more and more complicated.
Streaming giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Now TV only offer a limited range of titles, especially if you’re looking for brand new releases. The world of digital downloads is also confusing with a huge range of online destinations – Google Play, TalkTalk TV Store, Amazon, iTunes, Sky Store – all offering similar services.
A new service that seeks to stand out is the free subscription CHILI. Launched in Italy in 2012, CHILI is described by its CEO Giorgio Tacchia as “one stop shop for all your entertainment needs”.
Like iTunes or Google Play, you can rent or buy the latest versions of home entertainment such as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Where Sicario 2 (rental of the first film is free), alongside older films such as the original jurassic park (rental for 90p) or the 1933 King Kong. There is also a huge range of TV boxes available for rental or purchase.
Where CHILI sets itself apart from its big rivals is the ability to purchase merchandising, as well as physical DVDs and Blu-rays, for these films in addition to video rentals. Completing the 360 cinema experience is also the ability to check local movie times for new theatrical releases.
Tacchia also hopes to add the possibility of buying movie tickets to the site soon. He’s also looking to launch a pioneering movie pack that would combine a movie ticket with a digital download code at some point in the future. So, theoretically, if you bought a movie ticket for Bohemian Rhapsody via CHILE, for a little more money, you could also get the film as a digital download when it is released.
With the support of Hollywood giants Warner Bros., Paramount, Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox and many more, CHILE has expanded to Germany, Poland, Austria and the UK, and now has 2 million registered users around the world.
We caught up with Giorgio Tacchia to learn more about the future of CHILI, including the recent platform expansion at film festivals.
Yahoo Movies UK: What is CHILI and how is it different from other film services?
Giorgio Tacchia: CHILE is the only pan-European independent reality TV service that has developed the first and only entertainment-centric marketplace, which is a unique hub for everything a movie buff is passionate about.
We don’t just want to take market share from Netflix and Amazon. CHILE, thanks to its advantageous exit window, works alongside SVOD services by supplementing and complementing their offerings with its own unique character-centric platform. We take the movie experience one step further by providing a one-stop shop for all of your entertainment needs; including offering all the latest news, access to movie tickets, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, digital content from months before and official movie products.
Where did the idea come from?
While visiting Silicon Valley frequently, I was surrounded by inspiring people in the tech arena and had also spent over a decade in media and television. So launching a unique film and television service was a natural next step for me. We launched CHILI on the Italian market in 2012, with the aim of creating a unique character-centric concept.
Getting the support of Hollywood studios – Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Viacom, Sony Pictures and 20th Century Fox – as shareholders was a turning point for CHILI. This has propelled CHILE from a digital library to one of the largest on-demand movies and TV series platforms in Italy and an unrivaled entertainment hub. The platform has now amassed 2 million registered customers and has gained fans in Germany, Poland, Austria and now the UK.
What is the demographics of your user base?
The CHILI platform is for all movie and character enthusiasts, from Hollywood titles to independent labels.
If you like jurassic park you may want to watch the original movies to prepare for a trip to the movies to see the latest Jurassic World installment, while wearing your classic jurassic park tee. How many different websites or trips would you have to take to experience a movie or movie franchise this way? CHILE offers all of this in one place, so the platform is aimed at people who not only want to watch but also really want to experience movies.
What are your hopes for the future of CHILE?
We want to develop our customers. In major cities of the United Kingdom. Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and London have loved the service since its launch, we want to continue to develop this customer base and expand it to other parts of the UK. Across Europe, we are on track to reach 15 million consumers by 2022. Our hope is that CHILE will become the first point of call for the entertainment needs of all moviegoers.
What’s the next big innovation you hope to launch?
You have always been able to check the times and details of the shows at your local cinemas through the CHILI platform, but in the near future we are about to launch the possibility of purchasing movie tickets through CHILI. . This means that you can take advantage of our bundles, such as receiving the digital version after watching the movie on the big screen.
What challenges have you encountered in deploying CHILI beyond Italy?
The UK is a mature market for on-demand TV and movies, it has excellent broadband access, Smart TV usage and there is a strong appetite for English-speaking Hollywood content, so CHILE has been well received here. Beyond Italy and the UK, CHILI is present in Austria, Poland and Germany, where the service has also rapidly developed a strong user base, now totaling over 2 million.
Why was it important for you to team up with international film festivals?
The Milano Film festival is a much anticipated and well attended event in Milan, and thanks to our connection with Lavazza, this year we become for the first time the digital partner of the festival. This meant that we could bring the classic festival titles to a UK audience through our online platform. It’s the same with the BFI Film Festival, while tickets can be hard to get in London, we would like to give everyone the chance to experience at least part of festivals like this in their country or in the foreigner.
