Vandals Damage Field of Dreams Movie Site in Iowa

The Iowa “Field of Dreams” baseball field was damaged after a vandal drove a vehicle across the field, digging deep marks into the soggy field earlier this week.

Al Steffen, the field manager for the Dyersville site, told Fox News Wednesday that the damage was discovered by workers showing up early Tuesday morning.

This is not the first time that the land, which served as the setting for the 1989 film “Field of Dreams” with Kevin Costner, has been the target of vandals.

However, Steffen noted that “it has never been so bad,” describing how the vehicle tore deep gashes up to four inches deep in center and left field.

In addition to the destruction of the grass, Steffen told the Dubuque Telegraph Herald that the field’s watering system may also have been damaged, but a final assessment could not be made until the seasons had changed.

“We have to wait until spring to figure out how much we’re going to have to tear up,” Steffen said.

There are no security cameras monitoring the grounds, so officials have limited information regarding the vandals and, although police have been notified, it will be up to the owners of the land to foot the bill.

In order to generate money to pay for repairs and install a new security system, a GoFundMe page was set up with the goal of raising $ 15,000.

Depending on the extent of the damage, repairs can take place all summer but the land will remain open to the public as “a lot of people travel (from) all over the world to come and see the Field of Dreams, and they don’t don’t always check Facebook to make sure we’re open, ”Stillman told the Dubuque Telegraph.
