Wes Anderson’s film in Spain: information on the cast, title and release date

Wes Anderson’s new movie The French dispatch, starring Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet and Bill Murray, isn’t even on our screens yet, but work has started on the famous author’s next project, with his typical star-studded cast list starting to build. In one Variety interview, its essential star Tilda Swinton revealed that plans for a new film were already in the works. Yes, another Tilda and Wes collaboration is on the way. Filming is scheduled in Spain, some familiar faces return and will introduce two new Hollywood legends to Wes’s world: Tom Hanks and Margot Robbie.

So what do we know so far about this next super secret Wes Anderson project? Well, not much. But here’s what we’ve gathered so far.

How do you call this?

Wes Anderson tends to title his films after the places they take place, or the places within them: think The island of dogs, Moonrise kingdom, Rushmore, The Grand Hotel Budapest and The French dispatch. With that in mind, don’t be surprised if Wes’ latest project is a riff on something similar. It should be noted that although the film is being shot in Spain (more details in a moment), Tilda asserted that the film “is not about Spain”, which forces us to go back to square one in our investigative work. More when you have it!

Who is in the cast?

As we know, Wes tends to recast the actors he loves, so don’t be surprised if you see some familiar faces in them. Alongside Tilda, who announced her casting in the aforementioned Variety interview, sources close to the production say Bill Murray was also cast, along with regular collaborator Adrien Brody. It doesn’t seem so far-fetched, considering Wes and Bill have worked together on nine projects before, so this will mark Wes and Adrien’s fifth affair.

There are also new stars in the mix. Despite being one of Hollywood’s most legendary actors and the kind of affable presence you would expect in a Wes film, Tom Hanks will make his debut in the Anderson Cinematic Universe. According to hollywood reporter, he will be joined by Margot Robbie, who is currently on a roll as an author: she has already worked with Scorsese and has projects with Damien Chazelle, David O. Russell and Greta Gerwig in preparation. Tom and Margot are both expected to have minor supporting roles.

Do we think we’ll see a reappearance of Timothée Chalamet in Wes’s new movie? It is possible, but undoubtedly a brief appearance: one imagines that he will have the knees Dune engagements for much of the film’s shooting schedule.

Where and when is it filmed?

Now we know it. It was originally believed that Wes Anderson’s new film would be set in Rome this summer, with filming set to begin this month. But recently the location has moved to a town called Chinchón, 50 km from Madrid. Apparently, sets have been built in Chinchón that look like old westerns.

According to the Spanish newspaper El Pais however, the film is not a western. Usually, Wes’s films have been kept under wraps as they were shot on film sets, but the exterior locations of this new project suggest we’ll know more when filming begins in September.

What is the release date?

Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves! With The French dispatch Coming in October, you’ll get your new Wes patch soon. Don’t expect to see this new project starring Tilda Swinton until late 2022 at the earliest, we imagine.
