World’s most popular pirated movie site operated from Vietnam: US Trade Association

A recent investigation by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) found that the world’s most popular illegal movie site is operated from Vietnam.

“Right now, the world’s most popular illegal site, (at this point), is operated from Vietnam and has 98 million visitors per month,” said Jan van Voorn, executive vice president and head of global content protection at the MPAA.

The MPAA is in Vietnam as part of a global campaign against illegal movie sites. According to Voorn, the association’s goal is to support legitimate markets and businesses, while addressing illegal opportunities.

“There are more services like this [123movies] – sites that are not useful for legitimate local businesses, ”said Voorn, who works with the Office of the Police Investigation Agency (C44) to tackle the problem.

The number of legal movie and music sites in Vietnam has increased in recent years, with popular music sites like Zing Mp3 and Nhaccuatui (My Music) requiring users to pay to download, and the recent launches of Netflix and Spotify.

“But as legal sites grow, so do illegal sites,” Voorn said.

The top five most viewed movie sites in Vietnam, according to data from analytics site SimilarWeb, all have the latest Hollywood releases, but do not indicate whether the rights have been purchased from producers.

Regarding the recent incidents of live movies theaters, Voorn said it’s not just a matter of legitimate ownership.

“Education is necessary. Changing perceptions takes a long time, ”he said. “The Vietnamese need to understand that making a film is not free, companies have to pay a lot to bring these works to the public,” Voorn said.

Voorn also suggested that authorities should remove existing illegal movie sites in Vietnam and ensure that only legal content is available in the market.
